Daily Random 10, part 2
Before I get into the judging, I think I should share a small revelation for you. I had planned to do all the rating here, piece by piece, but sometime last night as I was downloading new stuff from eMusic, I realized that even if I purchased no new music it would take almost three years to get through all my mp3’s at a rate of 10 a day. So for as long as I find it interesting, I’ll rate and quickly discuss 10 songs, but there will probably be plenty of times that I’ve already rated the song behind the scenes. On to declaring worth through stars!
- Dishwalla - Only for so Long. 2 stars. One thing about random, it sure throws up songs that I’m pretty sure I’ve heard no more than once. I only own the Pet Your Friends album for “Counting Blue Cars, and I haven’t listened to that song in a few years. This one is decidedly unmemorable and ends with 20 seconds of silence. I don’t see a reason to listen to it again.
- Blanche - (Exordium). 2 stars. Okay, that was short. About a minute of stuff that they’d later rehash on the album and do it with lyrics and better.
- Pink Floyd - Any Colour You Like. 3 stars. Damn you iTunes, give me songs with lyrics! If I were ever high, I’d probably like this song, but I’m not.
- Pearl Jam - Nothingman. 4 stars. This particular version is from a show in Zurich, which is largely irrelevant. I just don’t have all that much to say about the song. It’s good, and probably should be 3.5 stars, but gets bumped up.
- Pavement - No Life Singed Her. 3 stars. Underneath an abrasive opening and chorus, there’s actually a decent melody hiding. Too bad it’s hiding too well for my taste.
- Smoking Popes - Pure Imagination. 5 stars. Shit yeah. I love the Popes, and this is one of their best songs, mixing super smooth vocals with just enough guitar crunch to make everything audibly delicious. Oompa Loompa.
- Cornershop - Chocolat. 2 stars. What’s with the 1:20 instrumental tracks today?
- Rasputina - Any Old Actress. 3 stars. Another casualty of limited ratings systems, I like this one much better than either the Pavement or Pink Floyd track, but it’s not enough to get 4.
- Nerf Herder - Sorry. 3 stars. I really only own this album because they played the credits music for Buffy. I’ve listened to the album maybe once (a more recurrent them on this project than I’d have imagined). Decent power pop with a little bit of a Jonathan Coulton feel, but not as smart as his good stuff.
- The Aluminum Group - Checking Out. 4 stars. There’s a great quiet driving intensity to the vocal delivery in this song. It just propels the entire song, and manages to do it with a hushed, eerie vibe. Also, it reminds me of Requiem for a Dream.
