Illinois Sick Day Access: Call for Narratives

Ding over at Bitch Ph.D. writes about legislation recently introduced (and now in the Rules Committee) that calls for all Illinois workers to accrue sick leave at the rate of 1 paid hour of leave for 30 hours of worked time, the leave to accumulate to no more than 7 days per year.

I think this is terribly important legislation, and not just because sick leave is a good thing. This bill would give benefits to part-time employees, a segment of the workforce that consistently is shafted, a segment of the workforce I’m in. Even better, it realizes that a sick person may not always be able to take care of him or herself, and specifically provides for the ability to take time off for family illness, appointments and tests, too.

Right now, they need stores:

We are looking for stories from people who can talk about the need for paid sick days—either you used to work somewhere that didn’t have it when you needed it (and what happened), or you are currently working and don’t get paid sick days.

We’re looking for brief summaries that we could turn into a letter, use as part of legislative testimony, or perhaps include on a fact sheet.

If you have a story, or want more information on how you can help drop an email to: takeastand@ywcacahicago.org
