Song Lyrics Game
At work a few people and I pass slower days playing a guessing game with snippets of lyrics. Today I thought I’d put out 10 snippets to the people who normally play. The results weren’t good. Out of the four people playing, only two songs were guessed (one person got both, another person got one of them). I also gave them verses of a song that wasn’t, as far as I know, played on the radio. The album it came from was big enough that it should have permeated through at least one of the participants. I assume that all y’all can do much better. (I’m not entirely sure all my line breaks are correct. Deal.)
- Blood and blisters on my fingers
chaos rules when we’re apart
watch my temper, I go mental
I’ll try to be gentle. - When the wind won’t blow
We really shouldn’t go
It only goes to show
That you will be mine - Take your time; hurry up
The choice is yours, don’t be late. - Well you’ve got your reasons
and you’ve got your lies
and you’ve got your manipulations
you cut me down to size. - Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there - I was just a skinny lad
Never knew no good from bad - A green plastic watering can
for a fake Chinese rubber plant - I know what it’s like to be dead
- When I was young I knew everything
She a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I’m guilt-stricken sobbing with my head on the floor - The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning the yearn for the cup.
**Special bonus song**
I want to grab through those brown eyes dreaming
take you from the inside. Lady, hold on tight
You were so right when you said I’d been drinking
What was I thinking when you said “Good Night”
I want to hold you in the Bible-black pre-dawn
You’re quite a quiet domino. Mary me now
Take off your band-aid, ’cause I don’t believe in touchdowns
What was I thinking when I said “Hello”
I always thought that if I held you tightly
you would always love me like you did back then
Then I fell asleep and the city kept blinking
What was I thinking when I let you back in
(The two that were guessed were 4 and 9)

I didn’t get number 4, even though I loved that album when i was 13… but the average person not getting “personal jesus” right away? That’s sad…
I managed tracks 5-10 without help, although 8 was a close one out of context and with all the other alt-rock thrown around it. I mean, doesn’t Billy Corgan also know what it’s like to be dead?
I knew I knew the bonus track but my brain wouldn’t get it. I was irritated after finding the answer.

I was pretty surprised that number 4 was one of the two that was gotten. Those aren’t the most representative lyrics from the song, even if they evoke the beat of that section really well.
I even gave people hints for “Personal Jesus” noting era and that it’s been covered by (at least) two very famous artists. I was sad by that and that nobody got “Come as You Are,” too, one of the people I sent it to is half a year younger than me. There’s just no reason why that lyric shouldn’t have stuck in her head.
