Book Blogging Infodump #3
It seems time for another roundup of read books.
- A Matter of Honor by Thomas K Martin
- A Call to Arms by Thomas K Martin
- Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
- Blackout by Connie Willis
After the last update, I’d read six new books and reread six others, a very productive January. This time they’re all new reads, although if I had found the two Martin books when I was 12, I’d have read them, and I’d have been much happier for it. Maturing, reading a lot, and being exposed to analysis really makes clear the awfulness of the entire series. Is it possible for the Suck Fairy to visit unread books? An example of the suckitude: a character who’d died in the first book gets reincarnated in the third as a Magical Horsey who, when alone at night with the main character, can CHANGE BACK into the lady she was before so they can, well, you know, GET IT ON. I say thee nay.
Happily, those were the first two books I’d read in this batch, and both Locke Lamora and Blackout were really, very, truly good. Locke Lamora is a dashing, daring scoundrel full of derring-do, and the most fun book about a con-artist I’ve read. With Blackout, Willis returns to her time traveling Oxford Historians, and to the Blitz. This time, though, there’s real shrapnel instead of Lady Schrapnel to contend with, and of course Things Going Wrong is a main feature of plot advancement. Getting to read new Connie Willis is always a joy, although this was tempered by missing the second half of the story, which won’t be out until September. Is it September yet? Please?
